How to Wear a Harrington at 30, 40, 50 (and the Pitfalls)

Comment porter une Harrington homme (15 tenues + erreurs à éviter)

The Harrington is the most wearable jacket in the men's wardrobe. But it's also the one most often seen worn incorrectly. Here are the rules of the game, by age and situation.

The Harrington (whether it's the Baracuta G9 or another brand) has a rare strength: it can go from a student look to an elegant fifty-something look without changing anything. You just need to change what's around it. We'll see how.

At 25-30: the McQueen energy

At this age, we're in the original reference register. The energy of the rebellious but clean, of the guy who has style without looking like he's trying.

The outfit that works

  • Raw selvedge jeans (Nudie Lean Dean or Gritty Jackson, APC Petit Standard) in a regular or classic slim fit
  • White thick cotton crew-neck t-shirt (Sunspel, Merz b. Schwanen) or white oxford shirt
  • Minimalist white leather sneakers (Common Projects, Adidas Stan Smith) or Dr Martens 1461
  • Navy Harrington over it

An outfit that works from the bar with friends to dinner at your girlfriend's. Total cost excluding Harrington: ~€250. Cost with Harrington: ~€700. And you'll wear it for 10 years.

The weekend variation

Khaki shorts in summer + white t-shirt + Dr Martens + racing green Harrington. Very English, very cool.

At 35-40: the mature Ivy League style

At this age, we're in a more dressed-up register. The Harrington becomes a transition jacket between casual and smart casual.

The outfit that works

  • Corduroy chinos (beige, camel, or chocolate brown) or thick gabardine chinos
  • Button-down oxford shirt (Norse Projects, Sunspel) in white or light blue
  • Penny loafers (Alden, Paraboot Michael) or suede chukka boots
  • Navy or racing green Harrington

You go from Friday happy hour to Sunday brunch without changing. This is the "I have my style and I'm proud of it" outfit.

The more casual variation

Raw regular fit jeans + thin anthracite merino wool sweater + white leather sneakers + Harrington. Ideal for picking up the kids from school without looking sloppy.

At 45-55: quiet elegance

At this age, the Harrington helps avoid the "Sunday best" trap — it adds a casual touch that rejuvenates without infantilizing.

The outfit that works

  • Grey or navy flannel trousers, straight cut, not too fitted
  • White or light blue shirt + navy or burgundy knit tie (optional)
  • Thin merino wool sweater in anthracite, burgundy, or camel under the Harrington
  • Leather shoes: derbies, loafers, or city boots
  • Navy (timeless) or black (more urban) Harrington

This outfit works for a casual business meeting, a lunch with an important client, a "chic casual" dinner. You're dressed up without wearing a suit.

The weekend variation

Raw regular fit jeans (not slim!) + wool sweater + loafers + Harrington. Effortless chic.

Mistakes to NEVER make

A hoodie underneath

This is mistake number one. Wearing a hoodie under a Harrington turns a noble jacket into suburban wear. The Harrington is designed to be worn over a shirt, t-shirt, or thin sweater — not a hoodie.

If you're cold, wear a thin wool cardigan or a merino wool sweater. It looks a thousand times better and keeps you just as warm.

Super slim or skinny jeans

The Harrington is short. Skinny jeans will create an unbalanced silhouette: tight top + tight bottom = an unflattering inverted triangle effect. Opt for a regular or classic slim fit (not skinny).

Good references: Nudie Gritty Jackson (regular), Nudie Grim Tim (slim taper), APC Petit Standard (classic slim), Levi's 501 (straight).

Running or technical sneakers

Noble jacket = noble shoes. Nike Pegasus or Asics Kayano will turn the whole look into "sport casual" — the opposite of the Harrington spirit.

Do you want sneakers? Choose minimalist smooth leather ones. Common Projects, Stan Smith, Veja Campo. Or boots (Danner, Red Wing, Dr Martens).

Cargo pants / sweatpants

Same as the hoodie: it completely distorts the jacket. If you want to wear cargo or sweatpants, wear a bomber jacket or a varsity jacket, not a Harrington.

Baseball cap

Not always a mistake, but to be handled with caution. Cap + Harrington = quickly looks "too put together." If you want headwear, wear a wool beanie (Merz b. Schwanen, Norse Projects) in winter, or nothing.

Universal rules (all ages)

Rule #1: simplicity

The Harrington already has a lot of personality (the cut, the color, the history). Don't overdo it. Solid t-shirt, solid shirt, solid sweater. No logos, no prints, no patterns under the jacket.

Rule #2: colors

The Harrington goes with almost everything, but avoid two combinations:

  • Black on black: a black Harrington over black jeans is hard to pull off. Either you own it (a very urban all-black look), or you break it up with white.
  • Racing green + camel: nice in theory, but hard to master. Prefer green + denim.

Rule #3: fit

Your Harrington should fit just right: not tight (you should be able to close the collar buttons without pulling), and not baggy (the shoulders should align with your actual shoulders). If it doesn't fit right, even the best outfit won't save it.

To choose your size well, consult my Baracuta sizing guide.

Harrington colors and their registers

  • Navy: an absolute all-rounder, from 20 to 80 years old. Obvious first purchase.
  • Racing green: more character, more connoisseur. Perfect with denim and brown.
  • Natural (beige): bright, spring/summer. More delicate to maintain.
  • Black: urban, contemporary. Less heritage but easier in the city.
  • Burgundy or plum: for connoisseurs who want to stand out. Impeccable in autumn.

In short

If you remember three things:

  1. No hoodie underneath, ever
  2. No overly slim jeans or sports sneakers
  3. The Harrington complements a style, it doesn't create it alone — invest in quality basics around it

The rest is a bonus. But if you respect these three rules, you can't go wrong.
