The Pègriot Navy Vest — the piece that taught me the word pègriot. And made me love it.
In Navy / Heather Navy with cargo pants and boots, the Gileton creates a direct and popular maritime heritage silhouette. With work trousers, the popular French Fleurs de Bagne ensemble is consistent.
The Fleurs de Bagne Gileton du Pègriot is the little pègriot's t-shirt — pègriot (or pégriot) is 19th and early 20th century French slang for a petty criminal, a popular street urchin, a young member of the Parisian underworld and port areas. One who was often sent to the penal colony or reformatories for minor offenses.
In Navy / Heather Navy, the two-tone combination of the two shades of navy blue creates a mottled and textured contrast reminiscent of old sailor's knitwear. Heather Navy is a slightly mottled navy, less uniform than standard navy. The Gileton is the small waistcoat — the format between the t-shirt and the waistcoat that was common in early 20th century French popular culture.
